課程概述

This course provides an overview of the essential communicative skills needed to write a journal research
article and present the paper at a conference or seminar. Taking a linguistic approach to written and oral texts, we will
examine the elements needed to effectively communicate scientific information in professional situations. Students will
explore the different styles of written and oral language through individual and interactive tasks as well as analysis of
oral and written texts. There will be plenty of opportunities for written and oral language practice as well.

課程目標
This course aims to empower students to be better, more effective academic writers, as well as to better communicate research through both writing and presentation. By the end of the course, students should be able to:
1.Know how to conceive and design an academic presentation for general and expert audiences based on their own research.
2.Identify and select effective features of academic and other kinds of presentations, and apply them to their presentations.
3.Recognize and utilize relevant rhetorical structures used in constructing research papers.
4.Developing proof-reading and self-editing skills.
5.Recognize and address common grammar issues that arise in research article writing.
課程要求
‧ Class attendance and participation is required. Missing more than 3 classes may negatively impact your grade.
‧ Lectures are presented in English. All student work will be submitted in English. In class discussions can be
supplemented with other languages when helpful.
‧ All materials are in English, and will include complex academic articles. If students need help with advanced grammar
for academic writing, I recommend taking the AWEC’s Fundamentals of English Writing class before taking this class.
‧ Late assignments will receive a reduced grade.
‧ This class will use both COOL and Google Classroom.
